Two Tips to Keep in Mind if You Want to Have a Sunroom Built Onto Your Home

A sunroom is a structure which can provide you with beautiful views of your garden and enable you to enjoy the sunshine without having to physically go outside. Here are two tips to keep in mind if you decide to add this type of structure to your home.

Add skylights as well as traditional windows

As the term itself implies, a sunroom is supposed to be a very bright space which is filled with lots of natural light. The most obvious way to introduce sunlight into this area is to have your contractor install large, floor-to-ceiling windows.

However, if you want to maximise the amount of sunlight that can get into this structure, it's also a good idea to have your contractor install skylights into the roof of the extension, as this will ensure that light continues to stream into the room when the sun is positioned directly overhead.

When looking at the styles on offer from skylight window manufacturers, make sure not to choose a particular window purely because of how well it will match the rest of your home's architecture; it's also important to ensure that the one you select is a practical choice, too.

For example, if you live in an area which gets extremely warm during the summer season, you might want a vented skylight so that you can prevent the room from getting uncomfortably hot during this time of the year.

Conversely, if the area that you reside in is prone to sudden, heavy showers, it might be best to opt for a fixed skylight (i.e., one that cannot be opened) so that your sunroom doesn't end up flooded if you accidentally leave the skylight open whilst you're out of the house.

Make sure it looks similar to the rest of your house

It is important to make sure that the sunroom blends in well with the rest of your house. It should be built from similar materials and should be of a similar style to your existing home. If you choose to build a sunroom which clashes with your house, there is a risk that the structure could actually reduce the value of your property.

For example, in a quaint cottage, which has visible rafters, low ceilings and flagstone floors, a sunroom that features glossy, modern floor tiles and has a very minimalistic aesthetic would look completely out of place. In this situation, it would be far better to use the same colour flagstones in this new structure and to incorporate other cottage-like features into the space.
